Istaghraq | اِستَغراق
Very commonly but incorrectly referred to as Kaifiyat by most people. (misconception)
Gharq or State of Drowning. (root word)
Mustaghriq or One Who Is Drowning. One in the state of Istaghraq. (related)
A prolonged state of Wajd where a person is fully emersed in Allah. So immersed that they no longer have completely ignored their 5 bodily senses. Someone in this state is often misunderstood to be a Majzoob. The state of Majzoob’s absorption is similar, however, someone in Istaghraq is of a level where they have full command over when gaining back normalcy whereas a Majzoob is at the Mercy of Allah and has not attained any control over his state. This is the reason why great Saints like Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra) and Hazrat Baba Tajuddin (ra) have often been misunderstood as Majzoob, yet they have always been in command over their state with Allah’s help. This is the state of absorption that Hazrat Ali (rz) would elevate to during Salat. It was during his Salat that others took out an arrow from his body easily without any physical discomfort.
